VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A Vancouver, Wash., man who stabbed his estranged girlfriend 70 times has been convicted of aggravated murder.

Superior Court jurors returned their verdict Thursday in the trial of 46-year-old Dennis Wolter, who killed Kori Fredericksen on May 25, 2011.

The Columbian reports that jurors found the murder was aggravated because the woman had a restraining order against Wolter, she would have been a witness in a criminal domestic violence case and he used a deadly weapon. In fact, prosecutors said Wolter used five knives to kill Fredericksen.

Prosecutors didn’t seek the death penalty because of Wolter’s documented brain damage. That means he’ll be sentenced to life without parole at a hearing set for June 24.

Defense lawyer Therese Lavallee acknowledged that the killing happened but argued that it wasn’t premeditated.
