Two newspapers say Weiner should leave race

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times and the Daily News are both calling on Anthony Weiner to drop out of the race for New York City mayor, after the former congressman acknowledged sending explicit text messages to a woman as recently as last summer. That was more than a year after sexting revelations destroyed his congressional career.

Some of Weiner’s rivals in the mayoral race are also calling for him to step aside.

But at a press conference yesterday with his wife at his side, Weiner said he would continue his campaign for mayor. Huma Abedin (HOO’-muh AB’-uh-deen) says she believes in her husband and has forgiven him.

Still, one Democratic consultant says the latest revelations about Weiner will make it tougher for voters to believe that his sexting scandals are behind him.

Some voters are saying that while they were willing to give Weiner a second chance, it will be harder for them to give him a third chance. But they are also taking notice of the fact that Weiner’s wife is standing by him.
