SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say an 18-year-old man drowned Tuesday afternoon as he tried to swim across the Spokane River after watching others do so in the Spokane Valley area.
Spokane Valley Fire Department spokesman Bill Clifford says bystanders called for help after the teen jumped into the water with a female friend. Neither wore life jackets.
The Spokesman-Review reports that CPR was performed on the young man after he was pulled out of about five feet of water but he could not be revived.
The teen was not immediately identified.
The fire department spokesman urged swimmers to wear life jackets and to be aware of dangerous undercurrents.
