Philippine typhoon death toll rises above 5,000

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine officials say the post-typhoon situation is stabilizing, though the death toll has passed 5,000.

Authorities say major roads on Samar and Leyte (LAY’-tay) islands are clear of debris, while some banks, stores and gasoline stations are resuming business.

Philippine government officials say the bodies of 5,209 people have been counted in the central and southern Philippines. They still expect the death toll to climb further.
