16-year-old Vancouver resident Lijah Hanley came in second place recently in the National Geographic Student Expedition Contest. Among the photos he submitted was a 70-minute exposure of an old schoolhouse near The Dalles, with the stars tracing circular paths on the long exposure.

He shot one 10-minute exposure of the beach and a second 30-second exposure of himself for the image. “It was almost completely dark out there, and yet the camera picked up so much light,” he said.
