<itunes:summary>Lisa Farquharson, President and CEO of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce visited the Haystack Broadcasting studios in The Dalles this morning to talk about the "Open for Business Tour" coming up June 29. Below the interview bar is the press release issued earlier, and the button at the bottom of the page links to a one-sheet about the tour, with pictures of several of the buildings involved.

(THE DALLES ) -- The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce is planning to host the 'Open for Business Tour' on Saturday, June 29th from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. A total of 10 buildings will be a part of this tour.

The Dalles is a rural town in the Columbia Gorge region which services approximately 80,000 people. This town has positive ambitions as it aims to reduce some of its empty buildings and store fronts. A few community members belonging to various community organizations such as the Port of The Dalles, The Dalles Main Street Committee, The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce, and The Dalles Small Business Development Center (SBDC) met to address the issue of vacant buildings/store fronts. This coalition of community members has decided to put together an ‘Open for Business Tour' of the buildings that are available for purchase or lease in the Downtown area.

Locations that will be a part of the tour on June 29th are: Matthew Building, Honald Building, Mori nBuilding, Tony's Town & Country Building, Jerry Jeffers Building, Craig's Office Supply Building, Commodore, Ice House, Turner's Upstairs, and Old Lilo's Restaurant. A map of the tour along with building addresses and locations will be available for pick up at 9:30 am on Saturday, June 29th at The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce 404 West 2nd Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 or at any of the buildings on the tour.

Lisa Farquharson, President/CEO of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce would like to see a mix of business come to the Downtown area. "We're inviting a variety of businesses, real estate agents, and developers." Lisa hopes that the invitees see the potential in The Dalles.

Farquharson got the inspiration to do the 'Open for Business Tour' based off of a concept that the Webster City Chamber in Iowa developed. The 'Open for Business Tour' aims to bring some life back to the Downtown area. Looking to re-purpose some buildings, Farquharson adds "We're open for all types of opportunities."

A fellow collaborator on the 'Open for Business Tour' Mary Merrill, Director of the Small Business Development Center at Columbia Gorge Community College contacted the City regarding Vertical Housing in Downtown The Dalles and aspects that this subject will go before City Council on July 22, 2013. " It would be great to see an addition of housing units added to our Downtown area, there's an influx of professionals and local residents who like the convenience and ambiance of living Downtown" says Merrill.
