Interview: D.J. Griffin – The Rose of Silence

The Rose of Silence cover DJ Griffin 300DJ Griffin author of The Rose of Silence 300Here’s the Amazon blurb on The Rose of Silence: Of all the places in the world, none was so strange as the kingdom made entirely of glass. When Traveler went into the glass village and met all the glass people, he was amazed. But when he learned that they had been cursed to be this way, and that they desperately wanted freedom from the scraping and jingling of the glass, he knew what he had to do. The Rose of Silence is an exciting story of adversity, danger, and victory. Does Traveler have what it takes to succeed? Can he save the people from their curse?

That said, this slender volume offers a form of a passion play in the guise of a fairy tale setting. It is an allegory or extended metaphor woven through and integral to the plot.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m. on November 21, hundreds of customers are expected to fill more than 9,500 square feet of retail space when Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette (GICW) opens its 49th store. During each day of the 4-day grand opening, shoppers have a chance to win one of five $100.00 Goodwill shopping sprees or one Grand Prize – a 55” flat screen TV. Not far from Trout Lake is a farm with a spectacular view of Mt. Adams and a field full of alpacas. It was a love of these woolly imports from the Andes that caused Barbara Hansen to give up her accountant career and turn from spreadsheets to spreading hay. The 1200-square-foot store on the site contains a wonderful selection of items woven or knit, stuffed or felted, all with the wool sheared in the spring from this nimble-footed animals.

Business Beat: Oregon Trail Games

Think there’s “nothing for kids to do in The Dalles?”  That’s been the complaint of some people for a long time. But anymore, not so much. One good example is Oregon Trail Games. Sandwiched on Second Street between Craig Office Supply and Yesterday and Today Records and Tapes, the bright, open floor plan space provides a comfortable, safe place for children to play such collector card games as Magic:The Gathering or classics such as Monopoly. The store also has a section of collector comic books from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and other publishers.

And it’s not limited to just young folks. Owner Jon Schellinger says people “as old as 50” have been known to drop by and join in.
