A Sunnyside, Washington man was arrested yesterday morning near The Dalles after a high-speed chase by Oregon State Police troopers and officers from Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and Hood River Police Department on Interstate 84.
According to a report from the OSP, a senior trooper stopped a car eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 60 for a speed violation. As the trooper approached the car, it left eastbound at a high rate of speed. The trooper got back to his patrol car and attempted to overtake the car as it reached speeds near 120 mph before exiting into Hood River where local police briefly tried to get the driver to stop. But the car returned to the freeway and headed east at high speeds, recklessly passing other vehicles. Near milepost 76 another OSP trooper deployed spike strips, deflating the right front tire. The Nissan continued for two more miles where it stopped and the driver fled on foot for a short distance before stopping and surrendering. 26-year-old Daniel Cerda of Sunnyside, was lodged in NORCOR for Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle and Reckless Driving. It was a busy day for the OSP yesterday. 28-year-old Alberto Quiroz Martinez had been sought by police in the suspected abduction of 26-year-old Melody Kaye Mickel of Hermiston. She had been reported missing in suspicious circumstances Friday. Yesterday a vehicle related to the case was spotted near a cabin in the Crescent Lake area in Klamath County. After a long standoff, Martinez tried to escape, using the woman as a human shield. He was wounded by an OSP SWAT team member and Melody Mickel was rescued unharmed. Martinez was transported by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
