Burn Barrel Ban passed at The Dalles City Council

It was yes on one and no on two last night at The Dalles City Council. Council members split on two controversial oridinances. They did pass an ordinance banning burn barrels in the city but rejected a proposed ordinance to ban all yard sale signs on city property.

The ordinance banning burn barrels did not ban all burning in the city. Open burning is still allowed with a burn permit from Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, but limited to specific times of the year. The spring burning season runs from April I through May 14 and a fall season from October 16 through December I. The ordinance was a compromise proposal worked out by a committee that included a spectrum of opinions on the issue, from a complete ban on burning to no ban at all. That committee met for nearly a year to generate the compromise proposal.

The second proposed ordinance, which would have banned any signs in public fared poorly. Testimony from the audience was overwhelmingly negative, and all five councilors voted against it, despite a warning from mayor Jim Wilcox.

The mayor also said when he drives owners of businesses thinking of locating in The Dalles around town, he’s embarrassed by what he called the proliferation of junky signs, and said that would keep people from moving here with new jobs.

But council members took a different view, as councilor Dan Spatz said:

Ultimately, council members went so far as to order the repeal of the complicated 32-page sign ordinance originally passed in 2010.
