Augustus Rose’s debut thriller The Readymade Thief is a unique blend of suspenseful plotting, a coming of age tale, and a trivia-lover’s brain teaser, with a tightly coiled mystery at the center that will keep you turning the pages. It’s impossible to pin down or put down.
A cinematic tale of a teenage fugitive on the run, The Readymade Thief follows Lee Cuddy, a young woman who has felt invisible her whole life, as she escapes from juvie and through a series of extraordinary challenges, discovers a fierceness she never knew she had. Lee reveals herself to be a heroine to reckon with as she faces off against a sinister underground crime ring and grifts her way through makeshift homes—an abandoned building inhabited by homeless teens, the upscale houses of families on vacation, underground raves, strangers’ couches, and even the basement of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
All of this to stay a step ahead of the group of bizarrely dressed men whose obsession with Marcel Duchamp has somehow implicated her as its focus. What do they think she has? And how can she use her power against them? Rose, a former bookseller at independent bookstores, spent much of those years perusing stacks of old, forgotten books on off-the-beaten-track subjects; books that couldn’t neatly be shelved in a single section. The cults, subcultures, urban exploration, speculative science, CIA mind control techniques, metaphysics, alchemy, conspiracy theories, and underground art movements Rose read about during those dusty afternoons all eventually found their way into the mystery of The Readymade Thief .
