Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place tonight for approximately 150 homes between Box Canyon Road and Woodland Road, due to what firefighters are calling the Monastery Fire north of Goldendale. According to a report from the Klickitat County Sheriff’s office, the fire has consumed approximately 2,000 acres. Box Canyon Road and Woodland Road are closed except for exit traffic.
We have also heard that Gorgeville was being evacuated, but nothing confirmed as of this time.
Currently, Highway 97 is down to one lane with a pilot car. WSDOT says travelers can expect up to 30 minute delays.
The fire is not contained at the time. Evacuees are encouraged to report to the Klickitat County Fairgrounds for help from local resources and the American Red Cross. Household pets will also be accepted at the fairgrounds.
Earlier today the Department of Natural Resources spokesman said about 420 firefighters were on the scene, and that about 100 acres of Brooks Park had been burned, including two park toilets. This morning Washington State Patrol Chief Don Batiste authorized mobilization of state firefighting resources for this fire. Some 55 wildland engines and 10 water tenders were mobilized and on their way today.
Department of Natural Resources announced the Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark will be on scene to assess the damages of the Monastery Complex Wildfire. He’ll meet with people at the base camp at the Klickitat County Fairgrounds from 3:15 to 4:15.
